Why Your Gymnast’s Training Changes Throughout the Season
This month’s Perfect 10.0 PT Enlightenment newsletter focuses on one of my favorite subjects: Peaking Your Gymnast When It Counts.
When it comes to athletic performance, timing is everything. Athletes train tirelessly, but the key to true success lies in reaching peak performance at the right moment.
In a recent webinar, Brandi, alongside experienced coach, choreographer, and judge Nicole Langevin, shared valuable strategies to help athletes perform their best when it matters most.
Big Picture Planning
Success in sports isn't about pushing for improvement in every skill daily. Instead, it's about creating a strategic plan that cycles through different focuses—whether it's strength, flexibility, or mental preparedness—throughout the year.
By structuring training in this way, athletes can progressively build towards their ultimate performance goals.
Peaking at the Right Time
One of the biggest misconceptions in competitive sports is the idea that scores should improve at every meet. However, the best athletes and coaches know that the goal isn't constant improvement but rather a steady build-up to peak at major championship events, like Regionals or Nationals.
Training should be designed to align with these key competitions, ensuring athletes are at their best when it truly counts.

Balancing Mental and Physical Demands
As competition season intensifies, so do the mental and emotional pressures. During this time, it's crucial to adjust physical training accordingly. Tapering down physical demands while maintaining mental focus helps athletes stay fresh, avoid burnout, and perform with confidence when it matters most.

What Parents Need to Know
For parents, understanding the strategic nature of training is essential. It might seem confusing when certain skills or routines are emphasized at different times in the season, but trust the process.
Scores may fluctuate, but the ultimate goal is long-term success and peak performance at the right time.
