How to Peak at the Right Time and Regulate Stress for Success
This month’s Perfect 10.0 PT Enlightenment newsletter focuses on one of my favorite subjects: Peaking Your Gymnast When It Counts.
In the world of competitive sports, managing mental and emotional stress is just as critical as physical training. As stressors and triggers increase, athletes, coaches, and parents must remember the core purpose of sport and learn how to regulate adrenaline and cortisol levels. If stress remains too high, it can lead to performance breakdowns, mistimed movements, and missed opportunities at key competitions.
One of the most effective ways to ensure peak performance is to plan competition cycles strategically. Rather than treating every meet as an all-or-nothing event, define each competition as a stepping stone toward a peak performance at the second-to-last meet of the season.
This approach allows athletes to build resilience gradually, maintain confidence, and avoid burnout.

Key Strategies for Competition Success:
-
Regulate Stress Levels: Avoid running at 100% mental or physical capacity. A balance of around 80% effort allows for adaptability and resilience under pressure.
-
Establish Meet Phases: Each meet should have a clear objective:
-
Meet 1: Focus on aggression and confidence.
-
Meet 2: Prioritize start values and connection execution.
-
Meet 3: Emphasize routine consistency.
-
Meet 4: Test new strategies with minimal consequences.
-
Meet 5: Begin refining landings and execution.
-
Meet 6: Put all the pieces together under pressure.
-
Meet 7: The peak meet—execute as planned. (ex: Sectionals/ Regionals/ Westerns or Eastern)
-
Meet 8: The afterparty—enjoy the accomplishment. (ex: State/Nationals)
-
-
Communicate the Plan: Involve the entire coaching staff, parents, and even younger athletes in the gym. Creating a unified approach reinforces consistency and focus.
-
Warm-Up with Purpose: Develop and practice a structured warm-up routine that translates seamlessly into competition environments, reducing pre-performance anxiety and setting the stage for success.
By approaching the season with a well-thought-out competition plan and emphasizing both mental and emotional resilience, athletes can maximize their performance potential when it matters most.
